When was the last time you thought about properly cleaning your rangehood? For many people that’s likely very little or never but forgetting to clean your rangehood can have a serious impact on the lifespan of the device and your daily cooking experience as well.
For example, once grease, dirt and other debris start to build up they can start to produce an unfavourable and lingering odour, can leave unpleasant stains/marks and even attract rodents.
Build-up can also decrease the effectiveness of your rangehood’s ability to vent smoke, result in your rangehood making more noise than necessary and could even start a grease fire.
How to clean your rangehood
Warm soapy water or an all-purpose cleaner and a damp cloth is usually the quickest and easiest way to clean the exterior of stainless steel, plastic and vinyl rangehoods. For the exterior of copper rangehoods, however, it is typically recommended that you use a copper cleaner instead.
To clean the filters in your rangehood, first, carefully remove them from the rangehood then fill a sink with hot soapy water and ¼ cup of baking soda. Submerge the filters and leave them to soak for roughly 10-15 minutes. After this, it’s time to give the filters a good scrub using a dish brush, a thorough rinse and then dry them using a clean cloth or paper towels.
How often should you clean your rangehood
For best possible performance, mesh rangehood filters should be cleaned at least every few weeks/months and replaced every year or two (depending on how often and the types of foods you like to cook). Carbon filters are different and usually need to be fully replaced every few months.
Some modern rangehoods include a handy automatic alert that signals when it is time to clean your rangehood and its filters or if it uses carbon filters when these need to be replaced.
